The Matting Yard | Trade Tech Series #01

If you’re heading to the yard to load up for a grass mat install, getting your numbers right saves you a second trip and ensures the grass mats stay put. Here is the professional "load-out" spec for our standard 23mm Heavy-Duty Grass Mats.

1. The "Parts Per Mat" Rule

Don’t guess your fixings. For a secure, trip-free finish on standard soil, use this ratio:

• Plastic Pegs: 5 per mat (one in each corner, one in the centre).
• Cable Ties: 10 per mat (spread evenly along the seams to "zip" mats together).
• Pro-Tip: On high-traffic slopes or boggy ground, increase to 7 pegs per mat to prevent "creep."

2. The Trailer Math (Payload)

Our mats are built for durability, which means they have some weight to them.

• Single Mat Weight: Approx. 10kg - 12kg.
• Pallet Quantity: 60 mats.
• Pallet Weight: Approx. 600kg +.
• Check your van: A standard 3.5t van (like a Transit) usually has a payload of 900kg–1,200kg. Don't over stack!

3. Critical Fall Height (CFH) Compliance

If you’re installing these in a play area or school, the inspector will ask for the CFH.

• Standard 23mm Mat: Certified up to 3.0 Metres (when installed over healthy, well-knitted grass).
• Note: If the grass is thin or the ground is baked hard in summer, the effective safety rating drops significantly. Always advise the client to maintain the grass growth through the holes.

4. The "Wedge" Finish (Avoiding Callbacks)

The #1 reason for a callback is a mower catching the edge of a mat.

• The Fix: Don’t just lay the mat on top. Use a spade to cut a 75mm deep slit around the perimeter. Tuck the edge of the mat into this "wedge" and peg it vertically. This "buries" the trip hazard and keeps the mower blades safe.
